Brian Gard
Brian Gard is currently the Manager of Safety and Security for a school system which includes 70 schools in 9 states. He is responsible for the well being of 40,000 students and teachers. He retired with 12 years of law enforcement experience with the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD). While with GRPD he served on the Special Response Team, Training Bureau and Patrol Operations. He has been involved in over 500 tactical incidents and has over 700 hours of tactical training. As an Instructor, Brian has logged over 1000 hours of instruction to Police Officers, Police Recruits at the Grand Rapids Community College Police Academy and CommTac Solutions LLC clients.
As a Police Officer, Brian served as a Defensive Tactics, Ethics and Taser Instructor as well as Field Training Officer. Brian was also named the Special Response Team Police Officer of the year in 2009. He also serves as the Vice President for the Thin Blue Line of Michigan and is the Race Director for the "Runnin' with the Law" 5k Foot Pursuit.
Brian earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Western Michigan University, as well as, a Master of Management Degree from Aquinas College. Brian combines his practical Police experience with the business and communication skills gained at Aquinas College for a unique perspective.
Frank Barthel
Frank has over 11 years of Law Enforcement experience with a large West Michigan Agency. In addition to being a Defensive Tactics Instructor, Frank is also a certified grappling instructor, firefighter and CPR/First Aid Instructor. Frank has successfully conducted over 500 hours of Defensive Tactics Training and trained over 600 people. He has also conducted over 300 hours of CPR and First Aid Training and certified over 300 people.
Frank's true passion is teaching and he demonstrates this with his leadership as a Field Training Officer and his adjunct instruction at the Grand Valley State University Police Academy
You will see Frank leading many of our Defensive Tactics and De-escalation training displaying his expert knowledge of these areas.
Mike Krenz
Mike has 25 years of Dispatch experience with a large West Michigan Agency. He is a senior training officer and is the recipient of the Michigan APCO (Association of Public Safety Communications Officials) Trainer of the Year for 2010. He was selected as Civilian Employee of the year in 2008 for his agency.
Mike has received advanced training in Critical/ Tactical Incidents, Hostage Negotiations, Suicide, Domestic Violence, Active Shooter and School Violence. Mike also has served as the only civilian of his agencies Cop to Cop Peer Support Team since 1999, a tribute to Mike's relationships with those he works with.
Mike's passion and dedication make him a great contributor to our Crisis Communication Courses.
